William Van Duyn Tobacco Advertisement Collection, 1913-2002.

The collection contains clipped pages from popular journals of cigarette advertisments arranged by tobacco company and thereunder by brand and year. Most advertisements can be identified by magazine and date. Although the advertisements are primarily from American companies, there are also ads from British and Continental brands. One can trace advertising campaigns by different companies in different eras. There are advertisments for snuff and other forms of tobacco, examples of cigarette packaging, and photographs of billboards. Finally, the collection includes news clippings and advertisements related to the anti-smoking movement.

William W. Flowers was the brother of Duke University President, Robert L. Flowers. William Flowers graduated from Trinity College (Durham, N.C.) in 1894. In 1900, Flowers was made an executive of the American Tobacco Company by James B. Duke. He became Vice President of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company in 1911 and served as Chairman of the Board from 1936 until his death in 1941.
